An Easyjet plane has landed safely at Liverpool John Lennon Airport following a mid air emergency over Cheshire.

The Airbus A320 departed just before 1pm bound for Paris when it changed course over Cheshire and headed back to Liverpool.

After flying over Wirral it swung around again over the Irish Sea and landed safely at Liverpool Airport once emergency crews had gathered near the runway.

Liverpool John Lennon Airport believe that around 175 passengers were on board the flight.

According to Airlive.net, Easyjet have confirmed the plane - flight U27045 - had a technical fault.

Emergency procedures included road closures.

Eye witness Barry Jenkins tweeted earlier: “It went right over me, genuinely thought it was coming down, never heard noise like that in my life, like metal grinding.”

Lisa Ryan wrote on Twitter: “My husband was in our back and seen it going over . He said looks like that’s not going to make it. It sounded awful.”

Leah Michelle tweeted at 2pm: “Well done to the pilot at @easyJet landed the plane back at Liverpool Airport. #lovepilots. ✈"

Liverpool airport spokesman Robin Tudor confirmed the plane had landed safely and passengers had disembarked the aircraft with none requiring medical attention.

Other flights to and from the airport were suspended for a short period during the emergency.

A statement from Easyjet reads: "EasyJet can confirm that flight EZY 7045 from Liverpool to Charles de Gaulle on 19 June returned to Liverpool shortly after take-off. The captain took the decision as a precaution due to an electrical fault.

"The flight landed safely and passengers disembarked as normal and will continue their journey on a replacement aircraft.

"The safety and well-being of our passengers and crew is always easyJet’s highest priority. We would like to thank passengers for their patience and apologise for any inconvenience caused."
