Today's anti-fracking protest is causing a backlog of queuing traffic in Upton this afternoon (Tuesday January 12).

For most of the day, there has been a huge police presence at the protest camp at Duttons Lane in Upton, set up by anti-fracking campaigners who want to stop IGas drilling a well at the site, after bailiffs arrived to evict them.

Officers from both Cheshire and North Wales authorities have been on the scene to uphold ‘all lawful rights’.

Travel website INRIX said drivers should expect traffic queues on the A41 at Long Lane, in both directions near Duttons Lane, due to the 'police incident'.

A protester locked himself to the top of a digger being carried on a low loader, which blocked the Hoole-bound carriageway close to the entrance to Duttons Lane.

The stationary digger, linked to the eviction operation, meant police were only able to allow one line of traffic through at a time - adding to the congestion problems.

When asked about the incident, Assistant Chief Constable Mark Roberts from Cheshire Police, said: "I would be speculating but I presume it's something the bailiffs are bringing in to start clearing the site."
