A driver safely escaped after their car caught fire on the A55 .

Emergency services were called to the scene near Chester and the A41 slip road at about 3.30pm on Sunday (August 7).

Heavy traffic built up for drivers heading towards North Wales as the road had to be temporarily closed southbound.

The motorist was able to get out of the black Ford Mondeo ‘safe and well’ before the fire took hold.

Pictures from the scene show the windscreen and windows have been destroyed by the blaze.

A contractor had to be called out and escorted through the congestion to sand a spillage across the carriageway.

The outside lane was opened first which allowed some traffic to filter through, with the dual carriageway fully reopened at about 5pm.

North West Motorway Police tweeted: “A55 all lanes now re-opened following earlier vehicle fire, congestion will start to clear. Thank you for your continued support and patience.”
