A 74-year-old driver suffered life-threatening injuries after being cut out of his car in a bizarre collision with a wall just in front of Ellesmere Port Fire Station.

The Vauxhall left a service road in a car park and demolished the wall at about 10.40am on Saturday.

A female passenger and a child managed to get out of the vehicle but the male driver was trapped and had to be cut out by firefighters who were forced to move another vehicle out of the way to improve access.

He was taken to hospital by ambulance for what were initially believed to be non-life threatening injuries. However, it has now emerged the driver suffered internal injuries and is in a critical condition at Aintree University Hospital in Liverpool.

A Cheshire Fire & Rescue Service spokesman said there were “quite unusual circumstances”.
