A DOG walker is prepared to block the Blacon greenway to protest at speeding cyclists who show no consideration for pedestrians.

Gulf War veteran Phil Boden is organising a demonstration against what he calls the ‘Lycra brigade’, claiming he was recently sent reeling by a speeding pair.

He and fellow dog walkers have already collected a 100-name petition calling for the police and council to act against those cyclists who ride at speeds in excess of 30mph.

“Somebody is going to get injured really badly,” said Mr Boden, 53, of Oakfield Road, Blacon, who wants signs erected which urges cyclists to consider pedestrians. He also wants cyclists to use a bell to warn walkers.

The former Royal Mail mechanic was sparked into action after he says he was clipped by a pair of cyclists who passed too close and alleges he was assaulted by them in a later incident being investigated by police.

Mr Boden, who suffers from a muscle wasting problem, added: “Most of the cyclists are perfectly nice people who say good morning and say ‘Excuse me do you mind if I come through?’. It’s the ignorant group of individuals who think it’s their domain.”

Mr Boden would also like the greenway to be more regularly patrolled by police and PCSOs.

Blacon Cllr Reggie Jones, who uses the route as a dog walker and cyclist is supporting Mr Boden’s campaign. He said: “It’s a significant minority of cyclists who use the cycle path as a racetrack.”
