Quick-thinking members of the public helped save a dog from a sweltering car in Ellesmere Port on Sunday (June 5), when temperatures peaked at a baking 24°C in the region.

Ellesmere Port Local Policing Unit thanked the individuals who reported the incident via its Facebook page, revealing that the pooch is 'fine' but the outcome could have been tragic.

Now the force is warning dog-owners not to leave their pets inside vehicles during warm weather.

The RSCPA say that parking in the shade or leaving windows open isn't good enough and still makes for a 'very dangerous situation for the dog'.

A spokesperson for the animal charity said: "A car can become as hot as an oven very quickly, even when it doesn’t feel that warm.

"When it’s 22 degrees, in a car it can reach an unbearable 47 degrees within the hour."

If you see a dog in distress in a hot car, the advice from the RSPCA is to dial 999.
