A STAR of reality TV who was a Chester University student has joined a girl band dubbed as Britain’s answer to the Pussycat Dolls.
Diva Mauthoor, 21, joined Chester University in 2006 studying psychology but deferred after completing her first year to appear in Channel 4’s reality TV show Shipwrecked last summer.
After her three-month stint in the South Pacific, where she met fellow band members Anna Morris-Ord, Carly Stratton, Sarahmae Davison and Sarah Sole, girl band Velvet Kiss was formed.
She said: “I went on Shipwrecked after my uni friends made me apply, we all used to watch it every Sunday, but I never thought I was going to get on it. I even had to turn down a job at the Students’ Union because I was going on the show but I wasn’t allowed to tell them why!
“I went on Shipwrecked for the experience, not to be famous. I wanted the challenge of living on an island. It was amazing. It wasn’t a holiday, we had no contact with the outside world. We didn’t even know what day it was or what time.
“When we got back from the island we did all the promotional stuff for the programme and we all became really close friends. I didn’t expect anything to come out of it and I was going to go back to university in September but the idea for the group just came up and we decided to do it.”
Diva, who trained as a dancer at the Stage1 theatre school in her home town of Essex, describes the girls’ sound as “a mixture of R&B and dance but still poppy”.
“We didn’t want to do anything cheesy, it’s all quite edgy,” she added.
The girls are promoting their debut single Turn Your Speakers Up and writing songs for their album, but Diva still finds time for her Chester friends.
“I go back to Chester all of the time. I’ve got loads of friends there, they all came down to London to stay with me on Monday for my birthday.
“I used to love going out in Chester to RB’s and Brannigans and I went to Cruise not too long ago, I just love going back. We are hoping to do a performance in Cruise at some point too.”
