Love and mutual respect are just some of the main factors a devoted Tarporley couple attribute to 60 years of wedded bliss.

Allan and Joan Haworth were barely out of school when they first met as students at Reading University before tying the knot on June 22, 1955, at Kelsall Methodist Church.

After becoming parents to daughters Susan and Helen, they went on to run a farm at Organsdale, Delamere , and spent the majority of their married life there before moving to Tarporley in 2002.

Over the years, Allan has served as both councillor and chairman on Delamere Parish Council and also was a trustee of Tarporley War Memorial Hospital from 1992-2007.

Passionate about the hospital, Allan’s commitment to highlighting its need for fundraising won him the Mayor’s Award for Endeavour in the Community from Vale Royal Borough Council in 2001.

Both Joan, 87, and Allan, 86, who have three granddaughters, were avid members of the Tarporley and District Decorative Fine Arts Society and still attend meetings regularly, and though their pace of life has now slowed down, they still enjoy going on holidays to their favourite places, Llandudno and Sidmouth on the Devon coast.

Allan and Joan Haworth who married at Kelsall Methodist Church in 1955 have celebrated their Diamond Wedding Anniversary

More than 100 people turned out to help the couple celebrate their special anniversary with a big party at Willington Hall on June 28, and they also received a congratulatory anniversary message from the Queen.

Their daughter Helen told the Chronicle: “They are a truly remarkable couple and are totally devoted to each other. They are the best of friends and their love for and undying loyalty to each other, has remained fast.

“They have always put their family first and continue to support and encourage each of our endeavours.”

The couple say their secrets to a happy marriage are ‘a mutual respect of one another, a busy and active life, family and friends but most importantly, their love for their two daughters’.
