Talented footballers from Delamere Academy are celebrating being crowned northern champions after winning the ESFA Small Schools Northern Regional Finals of the Danone Nations Cup.
After winning the Cheshire finals in Crewe earlier in the year, the team travelled to Newcastle where they faced teams from counties including; Cumbria, Durham, Northumberland and North Yorkshire.
Delamere made an excellent start to the competition with a 2-0 victory over North Walney, Cumbria followed by an excellent 3-0 win against a strong Newcastle Schools for Boys.
The third game saw Delamere turn on the style with a comprehensive 5-0 victory against St Joseph’s, Durham.
The next game was a hard fought 1-0 win against the eventual runners up Barkston Ash from North Yorkshire. Delamere ensured they won all five of their matches, scoring 15 goals and letting in none with a 4-0 win against Caldicotes, Cleveland.
They now go on to the national finals in next month, which take place at the King Power Stadium home of Premier League leaders Leicester City.
PE teacher Tom Freeman said: “Throughout each stage of this competition the boys have shown a fantastic team spirit and played some excellent football. It is a great achievement to reach the national finals and the children should be extremely proud of this.”
