SIXTH form students at a Chester school have opened a community cafe.

The pupils, of Dee Banks School in Boughton, held a spring lunch to launch the enterprise in the school’s learning centre last week.

The venture is supported by M&S Bank and staff and local residents were invited to the launch.

As well as the cafe, the students have created a salt dough enterprise using their own recipe.

They sold Christmas tree decorations and created gingerbread men tree decorations for Theatre in the Quarter’s production of A Christmas Carol at Chester Town Hall.

Teacher Helen Buckley said: “Everyone commented on how wonderful they looked.

“These sold so well that we got the idea to create Easter shapes such as eggs and rabbits in pastel spring colours, which have been selling well.”

All eight pupils in the sixth form are involved in the enterprise and have so far catered for governors’ meetings and a headteachers’ conference.

Helen said: “We are concentrating on high quality sandwiches and cakes, using vintage china and cake stands.

“We are interested to hear from groups that may want to visit the cafe and we would consider catering for outside functions.

“It is an enterprise project for the students and we are all involved in purchasing ingredients and preparing the products.

“We have also had some interest from local residents in Chester who wish to place orders for kitchen decorations of summer garlands and we intend to sell some of these products in our cafe.”

All profits from the cafe will be ploughed back into the business.
