CHESHIRE Fire and Rescue Service are launching a campaign to crackdown on a rise in hoax calls from Winsford phone boxes.

The Service has received 22 hoax fire calls this year from two call boxes alone - the second highest figure of any fire station area in Cheshire.

The majority of calls have been made by fairly young children so the Service has been highlighting the dangers of hoax calls as well as looking to increase monitoring of the call boxes.

Winsford Station Manager Matt Hopkins said,'Staff in our Control room are tied up in deciding if the calls are genuine and if we are called out on a hoax call it can cause potentially life-threatening delays in us arriving at fires or road collisions.'

Youth development workers from the Service visited Greenfields Primary School on Friday, Willow Wood on Tuesday, and visit St Joseph's School this week to talk about the dangers of hoax calls.
