An action packed carnival day and Poppy Picnic was held at Dale Barracks last month to welcome the Second Battalion Mercian Regiment to Chester.

More than 150 families who have recently moved into the Dale enjoyed fairground rides, a bucking bronco, assault course, tug o’ war and many other attraction. Barbecue food was provided by The Royal British Legion, Iceland and businesses and Cheshire West and Chester Council sponsored the event.

Councillor Jill Houlbrook said: “Its so lovely to see the families have such a wonderful time and holding a Poppy Picnic is the perfect way to make a summer get together like this more meaningful. The council have picked up a Poppy Picnic pack from Iceland and will be looking to hold a picnic later in the year”

Captain Jason Peaches of the Second Battalion Mercian Regiment said “The last few months has been very busy for the battalion, moving from Germany, Northern Ireland, North Yorkshire, plus starting training for deployment overseas. It was great to see all the families and Soldiers of the New 2 MERCIAN relax and enjoy the day.

“I would like to thank Julie Dove of The Royal British Legion and Jill Houlbrook for all the support they have shown, making us feel welcomed and part of the community in Chester.”

Julie Dove of The Royal British Legion said: “Armed forces families are a key focus for the legion this year. We spend £1.6 million each week providing wide ranging, and practical support to families in need, including crisis grants, family breaks, and benefits and money advice.

“Free Poppy Picnic packs are available from Iceland stores so pick one up today to start planning your event. It’s not too late and it doesn’t have to be a conventional picnic. A picnic can be indoors or in an unusual setting. We are enjoying receiving photographs of all sorts of picnic style events which are happening all over Cheshire.”

Poppy Picnics launched in 2013, with more than 1000 picnics held across the country at venues including The Royal Courts of Justice and The Old Vic theatre.
