CAMPAIGNERS aim to improve the environment and safety for cyclists and walkers on the busy Hoole bridge.

Chester Cycling Campaign (CCC) has launched an e-petition on Cheshire West and Chester Council’s website calling for narrow footpath-cycleway bridges to be attached to the main bridge to separate traffic from people.

The petition points out that Chester has been designated a ‘cycling demonstration town’ with some progress, including the extension of the millennium greenway, yet the bridge remains a problem.

It says: “Hoole Bridge is a major gateway to or from the city yet remains a bottleneck to traffic and a shockingly dangerous route for walkers and cyclists. It seems only a matter of time before somebody is killed there.”

“Constructing narrow side bridges, such, for example, as the one that crosses the railway at the bottom of Westminster Road, removing the existing pavements and widening the carriageway, would transform and improve the situation for everyone. This situation must be addressed eventually so why not just get on with it?”

The deadline for signing the petition is May 21.
