POLICE are offering advice to new students arriving in the city this term.

Sergeant Andy Burrage, whose team polices the area around the university, said many undergraduates would have had no responsibility of independent living before.

He said: “We would urge them to take on board basic crime prevention advice to keep themselves and their belongings safe in their new environment.”

Police offer the following advice to new students:

Close windows in rooms not in use and keep front and back doors locked and secured when not in those rooms.

Security mark valuables and keep them out of sight of windows

Shred personal documentation before placing it in the bin

Where possible buy shed alarms and cover vulnerable areas with security lighting

Report faults with security to your landlord and request that they be fixed

Report any suspicious activity to police.

Anyone with any concerns or requesting advice should contact Chester Inner Neighbourhood Policing Team on 0845 458 0000.
