A Helsby Parish Councillor is concerned broken lights in five of the village’s bus shelters will attract anti-social behaviour.

Some of the lights have not been working since November and the only two shelters that remain illuminated are those outside Helsby High School.

Cllr Stuart Hulse believes this could have worrying implications.

He said: “At the moment there are only two that are illuminated.

“All the others are unlit and have been at least since before Christmas.

“It is a concern because unlit bus shelters are a magnet for those wanting to commit anti-social behaviour of all types.

“And of course it makes it easier for bus drivers to see if anyone needs picking up.

“It’s a concern for older people, especially on these winter nights when it is dark for so long.”

Helsby Parish Council reported the problem to Cheshire West and Chester Council in November and again in December.

But a spokeswoman for Cheshire West and Chester Council explained that the reports had not reached them straight away.

She said: “We would like to apologise to Helsby Parish Council because unfortunately there was a delay in receiving reports about the problems with the bus shelter lighting.

“The council is now investigating the issues raised by the parish council with a view to arranging the repairs and will also investigate the delay to avoid any future problems.”
