FEARS of weeks of traffic chaos on Hoole Bridge in Chester have been quashed after the council fixed a broken wire in just two hours.

Last week Hoole business owners feared potential bridge closures could cut them off from customers, as the council prepared plans to fix an underground cable after streetlights failed.

But despite saying that the repairs would take more than a day, and threats that the surface of the bridge could be dug up, inspectors pinpointed the problem, caused by a damaged cable between two streetlights.

On Friday (May 13) workmen cornered off a small section of pavement and repaired the underground cable, fixing all the streetlights without any disruption to traffic.

Executive member for community and environment, Lynn Riley said: “Despite rumours and speculation reported last week, repairs have been made to Hoole Bridge with no disruption to access.

“I would like to reassure local traders who may have expressed fears for their businesses should the bridge have been closed completely that this was never an option.”

All lights on the bridge are now working, but despite the repairs one light remains broken at the end of the bridge, which the council say is on a separate circuit and will be fixed within the month.
