Heavy traffic on the M56 has cleared after a crash earlier this morning (Wednesday, November 25).

Two vehicles collided eastbound just after junction 10 blocking the motorway heading towards the M6 and Manchester at 8.59am.

Congestion built up stretching towards Runcorn and junction 12, but the cars were moved to the hard shoulder which allowed queues to ease.

A Cheshire Police spokesman said: "The carriageway was completely blocked for a while, but traffic has now been released."

A campaign has been launched to improve safety on the M56, but any smart motorway project will not be happening before 2020 .
