Commuters are facing chaos this morning as railway lines between Chester and Shrewsbury have been closed.

The line has been closed after a member of signalling staff has been taken ill.

It means that passengers will be unable to travel from stations including Wrexham General, Ruabon and Chirk – with the route expected to be closed until at least 9am according to Arriva Trains Wales.

The problem happened at around 6am with the first train affected being the 6.10am Shrewsbury to Wrexham train.

According to the Arriva Trains Wales website road transport has been put in place from Shrewsbury to Chester in both directions and will call at all stations including those in North Wales.

A message on Arriva Trains Wales website said: “Cancellations to services between Chester and Shrewsbury. Due to signalling staff being taken ill between Wrexham General and Shrewsbury all lines are closed.

“Train services between Chester and Shrewsbury may be cancelled or delayed by up to 60 minutes. Disruption is expected until 9am.

“Road transport is being sourced.”

The firm state that any passengers who have been delayed by 30 minutes or more could be entitled to compensation.
