A project to enhance Chester’s historic city walls has been highly commended in a national design award.

The City Walls EU funded PORTICO project, nominated by Chester Civic Trust, was honoured in the restoration category of the new Civic Voice Design Awards 2015.

Undertaken by Cheshire West and Chester Council and Chester Renaissance, the work was carried out by historic buildings specialists and architects Donald Insall Associates.

The judges felt that the project to restore and enhance Chester’s City Walls is an excellent example of how modern additions can be successfully added to historic structures, significantly enhancing the heritage experience for visitors.

Cabinet member for culture, leisure and wellbeing councillor Louise Gittins said: “We are very pleased to receive this award from the Civic Voice.

“The project shows what can be achieved through excellent partnership working and how listening to local people can achieve some fabulous results.

“Importantly the project has restored the Walls’ fabric but has also introduced new shelters, seating and innovative interpretation at key points around the walls. Their economic contribution is huge and this wonderful heritage asset is appreciated and enjoyed by both visitors and residents. “

Chairman of Donald Insall Associates Tony Barton, said “We are delighted that our Chester City Walls project has been recognised by the Civic Voice design judges. The (highly commended) award recognises the key part that the city walls plays in Chester and that even scheduled monuments can be changed and enhanced through good and appropriate modern design.”
