SOUTH Cheshire College could be moving from Crewe to Nantwich.

A shock shake-up of post-16 education would see the Dane Bank Avenue site sold to housing developers. Cash would be used to build a £40m 'super college' also housing Malbank Sixth Form Centre in a giant complex in the grounds of Reaseheath College.

Students would share modern learning resources and recreation facilities.

But the plan faces strong opposition from council leaders.

It would force thousands to travel to Nantwich and it is feared children from hard-up families could miss out.

Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council leader Peter Kent said: 'We understand South Cheshire College needs to expand but there are alternative sites in Crewe.

'Crewe has better transport links and to suggest moving the college out to 'the sticks' would create traffic chaos.

'More worrying is the prospect of local youngsters and mature students missing out on higher education because they can't get to Nantwich.

'We would expect South Cheshire College to make a greater effort to find a way to stay in Crewe.'

College chiefs say the campus, built in 1969, cannot cope with the demands of 13,000 students - a number expected to soar in September.

Principal David Collins said: 'Moving to Reaseheath would create a world-class post-16 education centre which would benefit the whole borough.'
