There was rush-hour traffic congestion on City Road in Chester this morning (May 26) as police dealt with a public demonstration.

Officers were at the scene of the protest, where more than 100 construction workers were demonstrating peacefully between Foregate Street, The Bars Roundabout and Station Road.

The traffic problems eased later in the morning.

The pre-planned Unite protest took place outside construction company Black & Veatch on City Road. It was over a dispute between the union and the company involving workers building a biomass plant on Ince Marsh Technology Park, The Chronicle understands.

One of the protestors, Stephen Atkins, said the demonstration had been planned for four weeks and stressed it was as peaceful as possible.

The demonstration affected traffic leading up to Chester Railway Station. Drivers were advised to avoid the area.
