AN AMBITIOUS £120,000 scheme to refurbish St Peter's Church in Duddon has been launched.

The vicar, the Rev David Herbert, outlined the project and Duddon school headteacher Paul Hudson spoke of its benefits.

Mr Herbert said the project would open up the church as a space for the community, including the school, to use.

At the same time as making the building more flexible, the space created would be more comfortable for worship.

Hoping the project could be completed in the next 12 months, the vicar has suggested the possibility of 80 fundraising ideas, each of which would raise £1,000.

With gift aid and £28,000 already promised, the total would be achieved.

'It will call for generosity, commitment and imagination,' said the vicar.

'What we need to avoid is a long round of coffee mornings and small events which will actually sap our strength, although they will have a place, of course, when what we are aiming for is growing a church at Duddon in the space we are creating.'
