CHESTER’S popular summer outdoor theatre project has teamed up with The Chronicle to ensure the event is an even bigger success in 2011.

Grosvenor Park Open Air Theatre returns this summer with two new productions of Shakespeare’s As You Like It and a new play by Glyn Maxwell Merlin and the Woods of Time from July 7–August 21.

This week, Grosvenor Park Open Air Theatre organisers Chester Performs announced The Chronicle will be the official media partner for the event.

Amy Bishop of Chester Performs said: “We’re delighted to have The Chronicle on board. The newspaper has always been a great supporter of the arts in Chester and especially supported Grosvenor Park Open Air Theatre during its inaugural year in 2010.”

After an impressive debut that saw nearly 6,000 visitors in 2010, the open air theatre is planning to double its number of performances this year and is expecting to attract both new and returning audiences.

Casting for this year’s open air theatre has already been completed and rehearsals are due to start at the end of May.

Executive editor of The Chronicle, Michael Green, said: “Grosvenor Park Open Air Theatre was one of the big success stories for Chester in 2010 and The Chronicle has been eager to support it from the start.

“We are delighted to be teaming up with Chester Performs as media partners for the event which we are confident is going to be even bigger and better in 2011.

“All we need now is for the people of Chester to show their support by coming along in droves to see the two productions which will also provide further proof of how much the city needs the new permanent theatre we have been promised by Cheshire West and Chester Council.”

Jason Doherty, senior manager for culture and tourism for Cheshire West and Chester Council, added: “Cheshire West and Chester Council are delighted to hear The Chronicle and Chester Performs are working together to highlight this exciting element of the city’s rich cultural offer.”
