Pupils from Christleton High School were paid a visit by premiership rugby side Sale Sharks as part of a free education programme that uses rugby to teach young people about money management.

More than 40 Year 7 children took part in MBNA Number Cruncherz – a financial literacy programme created by Chester-based financial services company MBNA and Sale Sharks for schools in the North West and North Wales.

Community coaches from Sale Sharks deliver the two-day programme using fun classroom-based activities that include managing the finances of a rugby club and paying for player salaries and transfers.

The programme also teaches children about the core values of rugby and includes a non-contact game of touch rugby to help young people learn how to play the game itself.

Teacher of PE at Christleton High School Gareth Barton said: “The children loved having Sale Sharks in the school and they’ve all told us how much they enjoyed the programme.

“Financial education is a relatively new addition to the national curriculum in England so it’s fantastic to see a free programme that helps schools deliver lessons in a fun and engaging way. We’re really pleased to have been involved.”

MBNA Number Cruncherz has already helped almost 8,000 children learn more about money management and the free programme has been to more than 100 schools across Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Cheshire, Lancashire, Cumbria and North Wales.
