THE first Summer Reading Challenge medals have been handed out to dozens of children at Bishops’ High Library in Chester.

This year titled Story Lab, children collected stickers and read six books in total over the summer holidays.

Story Lab events such as Mad Science and writing workshops by children’s author David Whitley were funded by Cheshire West and Chester councillors and were well received.

Great Boughton Cllr Pamela Hall presented young readers at Bishops’ High Library with certificates and medals.

Cllr Hall said: “The Summer Reading Challenge is an excellent way to keep up the children’s reading levels over the long summer holidays.

“Families have really enjoyed events that the library has been running to support the summer reading challenge.

“I was delighted that as well as children enjoying Horrid Henry and fairy stories, classics of my generation such as The Famous Five and Swallows and Amazons were still popular.

“Well done to all who took part and to the library service, which has once again proven to be at the heart of our community.”
