A bedroom blaze in the middle of the night in Ellesmere Port saw a man taken to hospital after breathing in smoke.

The first floor of the house in New School Lane, Childer Thornton , went up in flames, but a cause is not yet known.

Emergency services were called to the fire near Childer Thornton Primary School just after 1am on Wednesday (March 16).

A Cheshire Police spokeswoman said a man had been taken to hospital due to 'mild smoke inhalation'.

When firefighters arrived the first floor of the house was already 'well alight'. Crews went in wearing breathing apparatus and used the hose jet to damp down the fire along with a fan to clear the smoke.
