Chester actor Tom Hughes will reveal his dark side in new BBC revenge drama Paula.

The former Upton-by-Chester High School student will lead the three-parter, which follows the fall-out from a one-night stand a chemistry teacher has with a charismatic but dangerous man, and star opposite Olivier Award-winning Denise Gough.

The plot synopsis intriguingly says 'only one can survive, but their actions will take a terrifying toll on all those around them'.

Paula has been penned by playwright and filmmaker Conor McPherson and will be directed by Alex Holmes, whose credits include Coalition and House of Saddam.

Stephen Wright, head of BBC Northern Ireland Drama, said: “Conor is one of Ireland’s leading dramatists, and we have always dreamed of working with him. It was a joy developing this story, and we cannot wait for Denise, Tom, Alex and the rest of the team to bring his world to life.”

The role will follow another leading man part for Tom, who has impressed critics with his performance as Prince Albert in ITV's biopic Victoria.

The 30-year-old - who has been hotly tipped to step into the shoes of Daniel Craig as the next James Bond - has also appeared in legal drama Silk and Richard Curtis comedy About Time, dabbling in modelling for the likes of Burberry on the side.

Filming for Paula is due to begin in Belfast next month.
