As friends and families lined bars across the city, watched fireworks and celebrated the start of 2014 with the pop of champagne corks, happy couples welcomed their new babies into the world.

Three couples spent the first day of the New Year with their new offspring after giving birth during the early hours of the morning at the Countess of Chester Hospital.

Nurse Gemma Cowley and her husband Gary, from Broughton, were  delighted when their baby girl Esme came into the world at 2am weighing 8lb 10.5oz, just days after the couple celebrated their first wedding anniversary.

“I went into labour at 9pm on  Monday (December 30), it was a very  long labour,” said first time mum Gemma, 24, who is now enjoying  time at home with her gorgeous daughter.

“We got married last December 23.  We are delighted, we didn’t know the  sex, having a girl is a lovely surprise.”

Gemma, who works as a nurse at  Wrexham Mellor Hospital, was discharged yesterday evening and is  enjoying the joys of being a new  parent with her husband Gary, 26,  who works for Airbus.
