Not so many years ago, many of us spent part of each Sunday sitting straight backed on uncomfortable pews, listening to (or dozing through) a stirring sermon and singing our favourite hymns.

But times have changed and since then, many of the churches and chapels in our city have lain neglected, damaged, changed beyond recognition or simply disappeared.

A photographic exhibition held at Chester History and Heritage Centre from September 30-December 20 looks at some of these buildings, many long forgotten, that were once popular centres for worship, community and social meetings for centuries.
