A Chester woman who has been named the UK’s most glamorous grandmother, says the accolade has given her back her confidence after a tough battle with cancer.

Gail Cartwright from Lache, who has four grandchildren under the age of 11 and another one on the way, beat entrants across the country to be given the impressive title in a competition run by online clothing retailer Daxon.

The news couldn’t have come at a better time for the 53-year-old who has spent the past year battling breast cancer, and had by her own admission, ‘lost all my confidence.’

Gail, who says she enters online competitions every day, describes herself as ‘young at heart’ and not necessarily a traditional grandmother, is looking forward to spending her prize of £100 Daxon vouchers on some of the latest fashions that she loves.

“I’d actually forgotten that I had entered the Glam Grans competition, so I was so thrilled to hear that I had been named the UK’s glammest Grandma,” Gail told The Chronicle. “I was diagnosed with breast cancer last year, but I’ve finished my treatment and everything is okay now - I have been in remission for almost a year.

“After my scare I was feeling quite low about myself but this has brought me up to par. I will be 54 in May and I really don’t feel like a gran even though I love spending time with my grandchildren.

“I had totally forgotten I’d even entered this competition and just entered my photo thinking ‘I’ll never win this one’, so when I got the email telling me I’d won I was so excited.

Gail who lives with her dog Bentley, added: “I had lost all my confidence and my treatment made me feel quite depressed and unattractive so to win this has been like winning the lottery. Now I’m just really looking forward to treating myself to some new outfits so my wardrobe can live up to my glamorous new title.”

Megan Austin-Clarke, marketing manager at Daxon, said: “We had lots of very lovely ladies enter our Glam Grans competition, but we all agreed that Gail just pipped them to the post.

“We set out to find the UK’s most stylish Gran to prove to that we really can be glamorous at any age, and that being stylish doesn’t stop at 30. Gail very much epitomises this and is a very deserving winner.”
