A woman and two young children, believed to be from Chester, have been injured in a crash in Essex which claimed the life of an elderly victim.

A woman from Hertfordshire was killed and four other people - two women and two girls - were hurt in the accident which took place yesterday (Saturday, July 25).

The collision happened in the village of Little Wigborough, near Colchester, just after 1pm, and involved a Volkswagen Polo and a Vauxhall Astra which were heading in opposite directions.

The woman who died, who is believed to be in her 80s, was a passenger in the Astra. The driver, a woman in her 50s from Mayland, Essex, was taken to Colchester Hospital with injuries which are not believed to be serious.

The Polo driver, a 37-year-old woman, and a passenger, a five-year-old girl, were taken to the Royal London Hospital for treatment to serious injuries. A two-year-old girl who was also in the VW went to Colchester Hospital and is thought to have only minor injuries.

They are all believed to be from the Chester area.

An investigation into the cause of the collision is being carried out by Essex Police's serious collision investigation unit. Any witnesses to the collision or anyone who saw the vehicles on the road prior to the collision are asked to call the unit on 101.
