A student from Italy has been helping visitors to Chester make the most of the city.

Giorgia Penon, 17, has spent four weeks on a work experience placement from IIS JF Kennedy school in Monselice in north-eastern Italy.

Giorgia is part of a group of 12 students who come to Chester for five weeks each summer, spending their first week studying at English in Chester language school, before starting a four-week work experience programme in a variety of local businesses to gain experience and improve their English.

Chester Visitor Information Centre welcomes 260,000 visitors a year from all over the world, from tourists looking to enjoy the rich and diverse history of the city, to those searching for family history and student groups.

Assistant welcome manager at Chester Visitor Information Centre Andy Foster said: “Giorgia has shown confidence from her first day, working on the counter and interacting with our customers. We are happy to have her working here and look forward each year to having an Italian student placed with us.”

English in Chester, celebrating its 40th year in 2016, welcomes more than 1,700 students a year from over 40 countries. The school, which has been recently recognised by the EL Gazette as a Centre of Excellence, employs over 50 staff.

Groups coordinator Jim Freeman said: “As part of our commitment to local engagement we are delighted that Giorgia has had such a successful placement. We are thankful to all of the local businesses that have worked with us on this work experience scheme and hope this collaboration can continue for many years to come.”
