Members of Chester Vintage Enthusiasts’ Car Club are all revved up because the club features in a presentation of first day covers of new stamps.

Stamp collectors can buy the British Auto Legends 49th first day cover issue by the Great British First Day Cover Association for 40.

The stamps themselves feature classics such as the E-type Jaguar but are mounted next to the club’s name and logo with accompanying images of cars owned by club members including a Bentley, an Austin and an MG.

Husband and wife Stan and Chris Gilford of Huntington, Chester, have been in the club more than 20 years and are delighted the group has been highlighted.

Stan, editor of the club newsletter, who runs a 1926 Standard Stratford Tourer and is restoring a 1971 Volvo P 1800 estate, said: “We were quite pleased to been asked to have our club on it.”

Stan, 69, said older cars were hand-made with individual characters but accepted they did break down more than modern vehicles. He and Chris, the membership secretary, take part in rallies all over the country and their next planned trip is to the Cotswolds.

The grandparents also run a modern Renault Clio as a run around for getting to the shops.

Chris, 67, said: “I like the club more for the social side because we have made lots of friends. My husband is interested in the engines and the mechanical side, but for me it’s a great social club and I’m pleased it’s been associated with the new stamps in this way.”

Founded in 1959, the Chester club has more than 100 members who also hail from Liverpool and North Wales and as far afield as Ireland.

It is recognised by the RAC Motoring Sports Association Ltd and is a member of the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs. Its aim is: ‘To further interest in vintage and classic motoring and motor sport’.

The club caters for owners and enthusiasts of vehicles manufactured before 1973 – but ownership of a vintage or classic car is not necessary.

Members participate in a wide range of activities, such as scenic runs and rallies, starting each year with the New Year’s Run. A monthly meeting is held on the second Tuesday of every month at the Cheshire View, Plough Lane, Christleton, involving talks, quizzes and auto-jumbles.
