A 23-YEAR-OLD from Chester is one step closer to achieving his ambition of serving in the Royal Navy after completing the first stage of his training at HMS Raleigh in Cornwall.

Trainee Submariner Wayne Ingram arrived at the Royal Navy training base in January.

During a 10-week course he has been given a thorough induction into the Royal Navy, learning skills that he will rely upon throughout his time in the service.

The course culminates with the passing-out parade attended by families and friends.

The former pupil of Chester Catholic High School previously worked as a boat operator.

Wayne said: “I joined the Royal Navy for the career opportunities. Training has been intense, tiring and mentally challenging. It’s pushed my body and mind to the limit.”

With the first stage of his training complete Wayne’s next port of call is the Defence Medical Services Training Centre at Keogh Barracks in Aldershot. There he will be training in advanced first aid and lifesaving.

Wayne will also be trained to monitor the air and water supplies on board the submarine.

As a submariner Wayne will return to HMS Raleigh for training at the Royal Navy Submarine School, to learn how to operate beneath the waves.
