Tesco has confirmed it intends to open another outlet in Chester.

The Tesco Express convenience store will be located in Jewson’s showroom in Christleton Road, Boughton, triggering concerns around the potential impact on existing shops with fears raised about  double yellow lines being introduced. Jewson will continue to operate in its rear unit.

Tesco spokesperson Mark Thomas said: “We’re happy to confirm that we’ve applied to bring a new convenience store to Christleton Road in Boughton. Our store will create up to 20 jobs and provide the community with a great place to shop in a convenient location. We’ll be a good neighbour in Boughton and have written to residents nearby to let them know of our proposals.

“We’re part of the high street and want to see it succeed and we won’t be introducing double yellow lines or similar traffic restrictions on Christleton Road.”

The 435sqm store will “stock everyday essentials, from bread and milk to toiletries and snacks”. An application has been submitted to operate as an off licence between 6am and 11pm Monday to Sunday.

Hoole ward Cllr Bob Thompson recently claimed Chester had become ‘Tescoville’ when it emerged Tesco wanted to take over The Elms Medical Centre in Hoole Road in addition to all its other stores.

But Tesco says it doesn’t open stores if there isn’t the demand and argues increasing footfall can provide a boost to local traders.

Tesco has large stores in Frodsham Street and Sealand Road as well as the Chester Retail Park-based Tesco Homeplus plus a giant Tesco Extra at Broughton Retail Park.

There are Tesco Express stores in Delamere Street and Pepper Street in the city centre and another at Weston Grove, Upton.

One Stop shops are also owned by Tesco with stores in Faulkner Street in Hoole, Garden Lane, Upton and Waverton.
