A Chester teacher abseiled down Liverpool’s Anglican Cathedral at Greased Lightning speed to raise more than £500 for a charity close to his heart.

Ant Cross from Upton , a DT teacher at Bishops’ High School , scaled the 150ft landmark dressed as Frenchy from Grease in aid of Alder Hey Children’s Hospital where his four-year-old daughter Erin has received much of her treatment for leukaemia .

He completed the impressive feat with Irene Axon from The Alder Hey Children’s Charity, who was dressed as Danny Zuko from the 1978 musical, and even bumped into Coronation Street star Les Dennis who was abseiling for another Liverpool charity.

Ant told The Chronicle: “My wife Sarah signed me up for the abseil - I’d done little bits before but nowhere near 150ft. After Sarah stopped laughing she told me about the theme... We left the character choice to followers of our All About Erin Facebook page, and our kind sponsors. “They were not kind and chose Frenchy, so, at first I was a bit apprehensive as you can imagine. It’s not something you do everyday - leaving the house dressed as Frenchy from Grease.

“And turning the engine on and realising that a trip to the petrol station would be needed on the way back was the cherry on the cake,” added Ant, who said the drive to Liverpool was full of ‘interesting reactions’.

“When we got there, we had to wait at the top because a few people had second thoughts and had to come back down. It’s really high and after waiting on a dark staircase, it is a bit overwhelming when it’s your turn.

“My nerves disappeared when the instructor who checks your harness shouted to the one on the rope that ‘the girl with the pink wig is here’ which was followed by some friendly banter and disappointment!

“They were a great team who got me over the edge quickly and safely. The view and the abseil were amazing and the support from the spectators too. I’m really pleased to have raised nearly £500 for this great Children’s Hospital,” he added.
