PETITIONERS backed by more than 2,000 signatures have called for an urgent independent review on the effect of the controversial ‘hamburger roundabout’ on nearby traffic.

Last week we reported how Chronicle readers slammed the current state of the Boughton Heath junction via our Facebook page.

Since then, a petition was put forward to Cheshire West and Chester Council last Thursday, while contractors have started work on modifying the junction to improve signage and road markings.

James Holroyd told the council the junction was ‘grossly flawed’ with a ‘catastrophically confusing maze of lights and lanes’.

Drivers were using unsuitable rat runs to avoid it and the rush hour tailback on the A41 was often more than a mile long.

Great Boughton Conservative councillor Keith Board pointed out an appeal inspector had been convinced the design would deal with the increase in traffic following residential development at Saighton Camp.

Further improvements had been announced and he believed the review should be delayed until that work had been completed.

Fellow Tory councillor Pam Hall supported the need for an independent review at the developer’s expense and said she was disappointed an application for further housing had already been submitted.

Council leader Mike Jones said the junction had been tested by three separate consultants and the council was continuing to emphasise the strength of local feeling to the developer.

He believed the current state was ‘unacceptable’ and the performance of the junction should be taken into account when the new planning application was considered.
