Rail users are being warned to expect busy services in the post-Christmas period.

Arriva Trains Wales services passing through Chester between Shrewsbury and the North Wales coast, and Crewe and Birmingham, will be in high demand on Sunday, December 27, and Monday, December 28, due to Network Rail improvements closing the line between Crewe and Stafford.

Virgin Trains services which would normally operate between London Euston and Chester or Holyhead will operate between Chester and Holyhead only on Sunday and Monday.

Passengers for services to Chester and Crewe will be diverted via Shrewsbury, resulting in more passengers using Arriva Trains Wales’ services.

A spokesperson for Arriva Trains Wales said: “We will be adding extra capacity to our services where possible and on some routes replacement buses will be on standby, however we are still expecting services to be busy.

“Also on Monday, Crewe Alexandra will be playing a local derby at home against Shrewsbury Town placing extra demand on our services in the area on Monday 28th.”
