A PUB badly damaged when two cars collided with the frontage is reopening tomorrow (Friday) after more than 10 months.

Husband and wife team Alistair and Sarah Smith are looking to the future at The Bridge Inn, Boughton, after taking over from Alice Melia and Paul Lloyd, who were left devastated following the horrific smash.

Miraculously, nobody was killed. One of the drivers was prosecuted but the case collapsed.

Alistair and Sarah are well known in the city because they have run Brook Street post office and newsagents in Newtown for the past 22 years. Alistair says the experience means they are unafraid of working long hours.

He said: “It’s going to be a local traditional pub, with no loud music, sport when it’s on and the phrase we like is that it will be ‘your local, local’. The same faces will be behind the bar all the time.”

There will be five cask ales. A food offering will follow, featuring ‘no frills’ pub grub like fish and chips or pie and mash at good value prices.

“There will be none of your arty farty cuisine but if you want simple home-cooked food then you’ve come to the right place,” explained Alistair, who intends to spend some of his time in the kitchen as well as being the ‘number cruncher’.

“We used to live in Boughton,” he added. “And Sarah worked in a pub for years and years. She used to work at The Little Oak.”

The revamp, which has cost hundreds of thousands of pounds, includes new furniture, TVs and toilets.

This weekend will see a live band on Friday, the European cup final on Saturday, ‘killer pool’ on Sunday afternoon followed by a quiz with prizes and Play Your Cards Right in the evening.
