Willaston woman Gayle Newland has been convicted of three counts of sexual assault on a fellow former University of Chester student after tricking her into believing she was a man and using a prosthetic penis to have sex with her.

Newland, of Hooton Road in Willaston, was extremely distressed as the jury returned guilty verdicts on three out of five charges at Chester Crown Court on Tuesday afternoon.

When told by Judge Roger Dutton that the consequences of her crimes ‘may be serious’, she shouted repeatedly: “How can you send me down for something I haven’t done?”

Judge Dutton said Newland will remain on bail until she is sentenced in November on the condition that she does not communicate on the internet with anyone using a false identity.

She was convicted on counts relating to sexual assaults at her victim’s Chester flat in 2013, but found not guilty on two counts alleged to have occurred at the Dene Hotel in Hoole and a Travelodge in the city centre.
