A young girl cycled to school on style recently as part of a national competition.

Daisy Guinness, eight, from Newton Primary School travelled to school on a unicycle as part of the Big Pedal, organised by Sustrans and led by children’s TV presenter Barney Harwood.

Youngsters from St Oswald's CE Primary School in Mollington, Charles Darwin Community Primary School in Northwich, Dee Point Primary School in Blacon and St Martin's Academy in Hoole also took part.

The competition is the UK’s largest cycling and scooting competition for primary and secondary schools. Participating schools compete with one another to make the most journeys to school by bike or scooter over 10 days.

Barney said: “I am supporting The Big Pedal because I want to show parents that cycling and scooting to school is fun, cheap, and it keeps kids healthy too.”

North West Sustrans regional director Eleanor Roaf said: “The  Big Pedal is a great chance for families to get active as part of the school run and try out some of the cycle paths and walkways available in Cheshire through the Sustrans network.”

For parents who are thinking about cycling or scooting with their children during The Big Pedal, Sustrans gives the following advice:

• Make sure your bikes and scooters are in working order before setting off

• Plan your route carefully and  cycle it before you ride it with  your child

• Travel with a group of friends –  it’s more fun that way!

• Stay visible and if it’s dark make sure you have lights.
