WORKERS at Chester’s Hewden Plant Hire depot will not lose their jobs despite its closure.

Hewden Plant Hire announced this week a restructuring of its nationwide depot network, with the loss of 213 jobs and the closure or merger of 22 depots country wide.

The Chester depot, based on the Stanney Den Industrial Estate, Little Stanney will be closed by the end of March 2009.

Nick Childs, regional general manager for Hewden, said: “The depot in Chester will be closing but no jobs will be lost. Instead all employees will be relocated to Moreton on the Wirral. This is around 14 miles away from the current depot.

“We have three office staff who work full time at the depot and seven engineers based at the depot but who travel the country.

“The depot in Chester is very small, and it seemed appropriate to relocate staff to the larger depot near by.”

Hewden executive director, Doug Sprout said: “Everyone is aware of the rapid and unprecedented decline in the construction market which is hurting every plant hire company.

“Our first concern is for our staff who will all be affected by these changes but we are also determined to maintain the best possible customer service during this restructuring.”
