A derailed train is causing major disruption to rail services, affecting commuters travelling from Chester to Manchester.

The train, which was carrying out engineering work, derailed at Ordsall Lane Junction station, near Eccles, in the early hours of this morning (November 28).

The derailment has meant Arriva Trains Wales services to Manchester will operate between Chester and Warrington Bank Quay only.

People travelling between Chester and Manchester are advised to travel via Crewe.

Anyone travelling between Warrington Bank Quay and Manchester should walk to Warrington Central for alternative services, said Arriva Trains Wales. Arriva passengers can use their tickets on Virgin Trains and East Midlands Trains.

The delays are expected to continue until 1pm.

A whole host of other services across the region have been affected.

The affected routes include Manchester Victoria and Manchester Piccadilly to Liverpool Lime Street, Manchester Airport to Wigan North Western and Manchester Piccadilly to Preston.

The line at Ordsall Junction has now reopened, but delays remain.
