A busy Chester city centre street had to be closed while firefighters tackled a pub kitchen blaze which had spread to the roof space of the heritage building today (Saturday, July 25).

The fire involved a deep fat fryer in the first floor kitchen of the Red Lion pub on Northgate Street.

Crews from Chester, Ellesmere Port and Deeside used a hose reel to extinguish it and the aerial appliance to access the heritage building's roof.

A spokesperson for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Once the fire was out, crews checked for hotspots using a thermal imaging camera.

"A building officer was requested to attend the scene and the firefighters assisted with salvage from the building."

Northgate Street was closed to traffic while the incident was dealt with, causing delays southbound from the Canal Street junction to the King Street junction.
