A MURDER trial is due to begin today (Monday) after a former doorman was shot and stabbed earlier this year.

Boyfriend and girlfriend Scott Davidson, 23, from Frodsham, and Rachael Horton, 19, from Hawthorn Road, Little Sutton, face a trial by jury at Liverpool Crown Court accused of murdering 49-year-old Martin Ithell.

Mr Ithell of Great Boughton, Chester, had visited Mr Davidson’s home on the evening of Friday March 11, when it is believed he was shot and stabbed and where Horton was arrested at about 7.50pm.

Davidson, a doorman who grew up in Elton, was arrested at Blacon Police Station five hours later after the body was driven there about 1 am.

Neighbours understood Davidson and Horton had been living together at the house in Hawthorne Road, Frodsham, despite the separate addresses read out in court.

Hundreds of mourners attended Mr Ithell’s funeral which took place in the tiny rural church of St Lawrence, Stoak, near Chester, close to where he grew up on the family farm at Wervin.

The former doorman had been employed by North West Debt Recovery, involving mainly commercial work. He lived with Sarah Potbury, his partner of ten years.

Defendant Horton, a retail assistant and former Sutton High School pupil Horton, has previously been described as ‘sporty’ and ‘good’ at school.

Co-accused Davidson, a doorman, was raised in Elton with his identical twin Jamie and older brother Craig.

But his twin Jamie was killed in a car accident in Frodsham four years ago, in which another woman also lost her life.

The trial had been due to take place in Chester but was transferred to Liverpool and has been listed for four weeks.
