Chris Matheson has become the latest to quit the shadow cabinet team, as pressure continues to grow on Labour party leader Jeremy Corbyn to step down following the Brexit fall-out.

The Chester MP has resigned as parliamentary private secretary to the shadow justice team.

Eleven members of the shadow cabinet announced their resignations in the wake of Mr Corbyn sacking shadow foreign secretary Hilary Benn on Sunday (June 26).

A fresh wave of nine more Labour politicians had quit by 9am on Monday morning (June 27).

In addition to Mr Matheson are Jess Phillips, Steve Reed, Yvonne Fovargue, Stephen Kinnock, Diana Johnson, Anna Turley, Toby Perkins and Neil Coyle, who quit live on Sky News.

Kevin Schofield, editor of PoliticsHome.com, called Mr Matheson's resignation 'significant'.

While some have tweeted pictures of their resignation letters to Mr Corbyn, Mr Matheson will not be revealing the reasons behind his decision.

The Chronicle contacted him but he told us he will not be making any public comment.

Mr Matheson won the Chester seat from Tory Stephen Mosley with a slim majority of just 93 in last year's general election, making it one of the most marginal seats in the country.
