Three Chester men will take on the gruelling Three Peaks Yacht Race 2015 to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support and Alzheimer’s Society later this month.

Father and son Steve and Chris Briggs from Huntington and Jason Large from Christleton are members of Team Grand Slam – comprising three sailors, two runners and one support crew.

Now in its 38th year, the Three Peaks Yacht Race will see teams sailing from Barmouth to Fort William and two members racing up Snowdon, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis – the highest peaks of Wales, England and Scotland – en route.

Marine engineer Chris has extensive experience competing in sprint triathlons and cycling sportives.

At 27, he is the youngest member of the team and will be one of the two undertaking the running challenges.

He said: “I’ve not done a challenge of this intensity before, but I’m looking forward to getting started.

“We decided to enter in January and have put in a lot of training since then.”

The team – which is sponsored by Micro Precision Engineering Ltd, ESP Enigma, BaseFeet and Liverpool Marina – is hoping to raise £1,000 for each of the two charities.

“We chose Macmillan and the Alzheimer’s Society as worthwhile charities because all of us have been affected by either cancer or Alzheimer’s disease in the past,” Chris added.

On-land support Steve, a former GB kayak paddler and keen triathlete, will be following the yacht by road in a van to ensure that everything is order at each

Jason, a keen outdoor athlete who sails, skis, climbs, surfs, runs and cycles, will also be running.

Team Grand Slam will set off on June 27.
