A driver ploughed into traffic lights before abandoning his car in the middle of the road.

The diver smashed into the crossing point, leaving traffic lights hanging from their wires and sending traffic cones flying at 3.50am today (Tuesday, August 19).

He then abandoned his car in the middle of the road at the junction between Boughton and Hoole Lane, Chester, say police.

Road signs and traffic cones scattered the crash scene from roadworks for the new Waitrose store, and clothing was seen on the ground behind the smashed-up blue Vauxhall Corsa.

Police are now searching for the driver, who is described as blonde, and is said to have run off along Hoole Lane towards the railway bridge following the crash.

Officers found the blue Vauxhall Corsa with its headlights smashed and bumper hanging off after being called to a report of a one vehicle collision.

Sgt Andy Burrage said: “It is believed that the driver of the vehicle, who had blonde hair and is described as wearing dark jeans and a white top, ran off following the collision along Hoole Lane towards the railway bridge.

“The vehicle has been recovered for forensic examination.”

Police are appealing for anyone who may have seen the vehicle being driven through Boughton before the collision, or for any witnesses to the incident, to contact PC Laura Parry at the Town Hall Police Station, or to call 101 quoting reference number CC14244515.
