A man in his 50s died of a suspected heart attack while on a footpath-cycleway on the outskirts of Chester.

North West Ambulance Service sent a rapid response vehicle and an ambulance and the air ambulance to the scene near Seahill Road, Saughall, about 2.30pm on Tuesday.

Cheshire Police initially dealt with the incident which was actually over the border and later handed over to North Wales Police.

North Wales force spokesman Mike McGivern said the man was taken to the Wrexham Maelor Hospital. The incident was being treated as a “sudden death” and there were no suspicious circumstances. The Chronicle understands the deceased is from the Chester area.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service sent a crew to cut through locks on gates allowing the ambulance to access the cycleway in a location “heading towards Saughall”.

One firefighter said he understood the deceased had “come off his bike” having suffered a heart attack.

He said the ambulance had to drive “a good mile” along the path from the gate to locate the casualty.
