CLOSING down sales will start at Focus DIY this weekend, putting jobs in Chester at risk.

The 23 employees at the Boughton store on Tarvin Road have faced uncertainty since the company went into administration earlier this month.

All 120 remaining branches nationwide look likely to close after a fruitless search for a buyer for the group.

Focus DIY went into administration on May 5. Until last month the Crewe-based company had 175 stores and employed 3,290 people in the UK.

Fifty-five branches have already been sold, 31 to Kingfisher, the owner of B&Q for £23m.

Simon Allport, jointcadministrator at Ernst & Young said: “We have been working hard to sell the business as a going concern.

“UK retailers are facing one of the most challenging retail environments in recent times.”

The administrators are hoping to sell more stores, but it is not known what will happen to the Chester branch.

However, Ernst & Young confirmed that stock liquidation is likely to result in a number of stores closing, with staff being made redundant.

Focus DIY was founded in 1997 by Bill Archer and a business partner.

In 2007, it was bought by US private equity firm Cerebrus, reportedly for just £1 with the company agreeing to pay off £174m of debt.

Cerebrus is then understood to have pumped £200m into the business.
